Deep Dive – Themes, Writing Style, and Audience Appeal

The Psychological Cost of Espionage

One of the strongest elements of The Assassin’s List: CIA Assassin is its exploration of psychological tension. The novel doesn’t merely portray action for spectacle; it examines the mental burden carried by individuals who live under constant pressure and suspicion.

The protagonist must navigate a world where trust can become fatal. Every interaction carries hidden motives, and the emotional isolation experienced by intelligence operatives becomes a recurring theme throughout the story. Readers are drawn into the paranoia and uncertainty that define covert warfare.

Loyalty vs. Survival

A central theme within the novel is the conflict between loyalty and self-preservation. Characters are repeatedly forced to make impossible choices that blur the line between heroism and betrayal. Auston King skillfully avoids simplistic morality, instead presenting a world where right and wrong are often determined by perspective and political agendas.

This complexity adds depth to the narrative, elevating the book beyond a standard action thriller. Readers become emotionally invested because the consequences of each decision feel authentic and unpredictable.

High-Stakes International Intrigue

The novel’s geopolitical backdrop creates a sense of realism and urgency. From covert CIA operations to hidden power struggles within intelligence circles, the story reflects the dangerous unpredictability of international espionage.

King’s attention to operational detail enhances immersion without overwhelming readers with technical jargon. The pacing remains sharp and accessible while still delivering the sophistication expected by fans of spy fiction.

Fast-Paced Cinematic Writing Style

Auston King writes with a highly visual, cinematic approach. Scenes unfold rapidly with strong momentum, making the story easy to imagine as a blockbuster espionage film. Action sequences are intense yet clear, maintaining excitement without sacrificing readability.

Short chapters and escalating tension encourage binge reading, making this an excellent choice for readers who enjoy page-turners that are difficult to put down.

PART 1 – SMOKE AND MIRRORS

ONE

The coup d’état failed.
The streets of Turkey returned to a semblance of normalcy. The
government, its leadership unscathed, regained control.
Blood had been spilled, though, and many buildings had been
damaged. Over three hundred people were dead, and more than
twenty-one hundred were injured. The Turkish Parliament and the
Presidential Palace had both been bombed. In the days that
followed, the government arrested over 10,000 soldiers and nearly
2,800 judges, all accused of conspiring with the Peace at Home
Council.
Aslan spent the next two days trying to figure out his next move.
With no family left in the country, his options were limited.
He decided his best course of action was to visit his uncle in
Belgium. But getting out of Turkey wasn’t going to be easy. The
borders were locked down. The government didn’t want any
revolutionaries slipping through the cracks.
Aslan knew he had to keep it simple. He bought a bus ticket to
Edirne, a small city near the Bulgarian border. Once there, he’d be
about fifty miles from safety. It would take a day or so to hike
through the bush, but he knew it was his only chance to escape the
country without drawing attention. Once he reached Bulgaria, he
could move more freely.
Zipping up his duffel bag, Aslan gave his apartment one last
check and sighed.
He was ready.
He slung the bag over his shoulder, walked to the window, and
looked out at the skyline of the city he loved one last time.
The sky was a mix of orange, blue, and black. The streets below
were alive with people, small stands selling fresh vegetables, and
motorized rickshaws attempting to push through the crowd.
That was when he saw them.
Three black SUVs.
They were parked just down the street, beside the local bakery
and laundromat.
His stomach sank.
The SUVs were for him.
He knew it.
He tensed.
“Ulan,” he muttered—Damn it.
Thinking he might still have a chance, Aslan ran to the front door
but froze when he heard a knock.
It was too late.
They were already there.
“Aslan Bata?” an American voice called from the other side of the
door. “Aslan, I’m here to help. I’m the American you rescued the
other night. My name is Lawrence Cutler. Can you let me in? We
don’t have much time. We need to talk.”
His heart pounding, his eyes darting like a metronome, Aslan
considered climbing down the fire escape.
The American from the other night? How the hell did he find me?
How does he know my name?
He had been careful. No one had his address—not even his
employer at the hotel. All they had was a registered locker at the
Istanbul Sirkeci Terminal, the city’s main train station.
“Aslan, let me in. You’re in danger. You need to listen to me,”
Cutler continued.
Danger? What the hell is he talking about?
“Aslan,” Cutler said, “please. The authorities are looking for you.
I can help. Let me in.”
“Go away,” Aslan finally responded. “I was just about to leave. I’ll
be fine. Please, just go.”
“Don’t be silly. You won’t make it far.”
“How do you know?”
“I have it on good authority that Turkish police are on their way
to arrest you. They’re blaming you for the deaths of the men outside
the hotel.” Cutler chuckled. “They think you’re a damn rebel.”
Aslan paced, glancing out the window before walking back to the
hallway leading to his front door.
“Aslan,” Cutler pressed, “let me in. You need to trust me.”
“Shut up!” Aslan shouted. “I don’t need help. Just go.”
“Do you hear the sirens?”
Aslan closed his eyes, trying to clear his thoughts, but the sound
of distant police sirens began pulsating in his head. Were they
coming for him? Was Cutler telling the truth?
“They’re coming for you, Aslan,” Cutler said. “I can help you, but
you need to trust me. Either you hear me out, or you end up in
prison. What do you want?”
Cursing under his breath, Aslan opened the door.
“Thank you,” Cutler said, flashing a broad, toothy smile. He wore
an expensive white suit and still had the briefcase handcuffed to his
wrist.
“What’s this about? How do you know my name? How did you
find me?”
“I went to the hotel yesterday,” Cutler explained. “I was looking
for you.”
“The hotel only had my name. They didn’t have my address. How
did you find me?”
Cutler smirked. “You were part of an outfit called The
Hounds, were you not? A secret group of assassins hired by the CIA
to hunt down ISIS targets in the desert.”
Aslan’s heart skipped a beat.
The Hounds.
He stared at Cutler. “Who are you? How do you know?”
“I’m someone who wants to help you.”
“How do you know?”
“Listen,” Cutler said, his tone shifting. “I’ll get straight to the
point. I need someone with your skill set. Do you want in or not?”
“In to what?”
“I know the truth about you, Aslan. You’re a monster,” Cutler
said, almost as if he could read Aslan’s thoughts. “You had a
reputation for being especially brutal. My friend at the CIA said your
unit slaughtered an entire ISIS outpost—women and children.
Everyone.”
“I didn’t do that. That was Azmir. I…” Aslan’s voice trailed off. He
hadn’t killed innocents on purpose, but he knew it didn’t matter. He
was an accomplice. “I didn’t want to.”
Cutler softened his tone, recognizing he’d hit a nerve. He placed
a hand on Aslan’s shoulder.
“I’m not asking you to murder anyone,” Cutler said. “I just need
protection. No women and children—just protection. My security
guard is dead. I need a replacement.”
“Who are you?”
“I’m a United States diplomat.”
“Don’t you have protection?”
“Not for my personal work.”
“Personal?”
“Work outside my diplomatic duties.”
“So you want me to be your special security liaison?”
Cutler clapped his hands. “I couldn’t have put it better myself.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means that when I need guidance or help, you provide it.”
“Does this have something to do with that briefcase on your
wrist?”
Cutler glanced at the briefcase, then turned back to Aslan. “Yes,”
he admitted.
“What’s in it?”
“It’s just a list.”
“What kind of list?”
“Are you in or out?”
“I have a right to know what this is about.”
“I can’t tell you, Aslan. All I can promise is that your life will
change if you accept.”
Aslan stared at Cutler. The man was a liar. That much was clear.
He reeked of deception. But he offered a way out, and Aslan knew
Cutler wasn’t wrong. He was a monster.
“Fine,” Aslan said. “I’m in. I’ll do whatever you want.”
Cutler smiled. “You’ve just made me a very happy man.”
Aslan knew almost instantly that he wouldn’t stay happy for long.

TWO

Present day
Jason Drake walked down a street in the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II
in Rome. It was raining and a little after midnight. It’d been less
than an hour since he stepped off an American Airlines flight at
Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.
He’d come to Italy to look for her.
Sierra White.
She was missing.
She’d been kidnapped.
He was going to find her.
Sierra was a CIA agent with whom he’d grown close. Did he love
her? He wasn’t sure. If he asked himself that question, he knew the
answer he wanted to respond with—he didn’t want to love her. He
didn’t want to love anyone. For him to love someone would mean
that they would be exposed to risk, danger, and his past.
He couldn’t have that.
She’d been reported kidnapped days earlier. All the Italian police
had on her kidnapping was thirty seconds of grainy surveillance
footage taken from outside coffee shops. They’d shared it with the
American embassy, which then passed it on to Langley.
